Cycling holidays on Lake Wörthersee

A paradise for cycling enthusiasts

In the Wörthersee region, the first rays of sunshine spark a passion for cycling earlier than anywhere else in the Alps.

Whilst the snow is still melting elsewhere, trekking cyclists, mountain bikers, road cyclists

and the growing community of gravel cyclists here in southern Austria are already clocking up the first kilometres of the year.

Discover the Wörthersee region

At WERZERS, your cycling holiday becomes a journey of discovery

What makes every tour we organise at Lake Wörthersee so special? It’s the unbeatable Carinthian trio. Whilst the Mountain-Lake Panorama provides the perfect backdrop, the Alps-Adriatic cuisine provides the energy you need for the next climb. Best of all – after a gravel adventure in the hinterland, a leisurely ride round Lake Wörthersee on a trekking bike or a road bike lap of the lake, ultimate refreshment awaits right there in the turquoise waters. Anyone looking for a combination of first-class facilities, unspoilt nature and a mild climate will love cycling here.

Leisurely cycling between the mountains and the lake

Welcome to the Wörthersee Bike Hub! All around our hotel on Lake Wörthersee, you’ll find facilities that leave nothing to be desired. Whether you love a gentle ride alongside the water, are looking for a sporting challenge in the mountains, want to pick up speed on the road, or wish to discover the new ‘Hidden Trails’ on a gravel bike – here in the sunny south of Austria, thanks to the mild climate, the cycling fun often begins as early as the end of March.

Set off. Live life to the full.

For anyone wishing to combine cycling with a zest for life, wellness, Lake Wörthersee and fine dining, the WERZERS is the ideal base. Cycle at a leisurely pace along the sparkling lakeshore or explore the nearby Keutschach 4-Seental valley or any of the many other routes; you can also hire any type of bike from the local tourist office and the two specialist cycle shops in Pörtschach. Whether it’s an (e-)trekking bike, an (e-)mountain bike, a road bike or a gravel bike – there’s the right bike for every need.

Radhotel Pörtschach

Countless routes for all levels of ability

Carinthia is a paradise for cyclists of all kinds. Right from the hotel, you can enjoy a leisurely cycle along Lake Wörthersee or explore the rolling hills over hill and dale. There’s a route to suit every preference.

Tour highlights from Pörtschach:

  • Cycle one stage of the Carinthian Lake Loop along Lake Wörthersee to Velden, then take cycle routes R4 and R1 to Villach. The final stage to Villach takes you along the Drau Cycle Route.  Once you arrive in Villach, take the S-Bahn with your bike and return to Pörtschach. If you’re not ready to stop there, cycle back along the same route.

  • Another stage takes you directly north from us towards Moosburg, continuing on to Lake Maltschach or Lake Hörzendorf. This tour takes you to lesser-known and smaller lakes that are every bit as beautiful as the famous Carinthian lakes.

A route of around 30 kilometres, of moderate difficulty, takes you right through the nearby Rosental valley.

The route stretches over 48 kilometres from here to Klagenfurt and on to Lake Rauschele and Lake Keutschach, via Velden, back to Pörtschach

Head straight from WERZERS to Klagenfurt along Lake Wörthersee and on to the springs to the south of our provincial capital. An easy route with very little elevation gain awaits you.

Discover Carinthia on 1,300 km of signposted cycle routes. Whether you’re taking it easy by the lakeside or tackling top routes such as the Drau Cycle Route and the Seen-Schleife – thanks to “Kärnten rent e-bike”, you can enjoy maximum freedom. With around 50 hire stations across the region, you can flexibly hire and return your e-bike wherever suits you best.
