When tourism around Lake Wörthersee flourished at the end of the 19th century, thanks to the ongoing construction of railway links to the south, a suitable infrastructure had to be put in place quickly to cater for city-dwellers seeking peace and quiet. This led to the construction of numerous villas, boathouses and bathing houses around Lake Wörthersee – all in the style known as ‘Wörthersee architecture’.

Typical features include numerous bay windows, loggias, covered terraces, decorative gables, dormers, columns and basket-arch windows. A glance at the bathing house makes it clear: it is an ideal example of Wörthersee architecture and, as such, has been a listed building since the 1980s. No wonder, as it is the last of its kind out of the 10 bathing houses that once stood here.

Diving in style

The Werzer Bathhouse was built in 1895 at the tip of the Landspitz peninsula off Pörtschach, based on plans by the architect Josef Victor Fuchs. A relic of the emerging leisure and bathing culture of the 19th century, it was originally used as a swimming school for adults, in keeping with the customs of the time, featuring two swimming pools which were separated into men’s and women’s sections.

Revitalisation

A new lease of life for a gem from a glamorous era

This historic building was not only a popular photo opportunity for all visitors to the Wörthersee area – and, of course, especially for those of the WERZER – but it also has many stories to tell. No wonder, given that this extraordinary building has stood here since 1895. The architect Josef Viktor Fuchs gave the building its unique charm. Like a jewel, it has stood on the shores of Austria’s largest and most popular lake for over 100 years.

In 1987, it was listed as a historic monument, and in 2014, under the direction of BM Ing. Hans Werner Frömmel, it was lovingly renovated and rebuilt at a total cost of 5.4 million euros, alongside the new WERZERS Kinderland. Naturally, this was carried out in full compliance with all the requirements imposed by the heritage protection authorities. After all, it is the last of its kind from that era and, for that reason alone, is of inestimable value – and a part of history in any case.

Extensive renovation

A story with a sequel

The two pools have gone, but the unmistakable charm of this dainty relic of a bygone era remains: With its picturesque turrets, ornate loggias and green-painted details, the white-painted, elongated larch timber building – constructed on 350 larch timber piles directly in the water – continues to enchant its visitors.

In 2014, under the direction of Mayor Hans Werner Frömmel, it underwent an extensive and loving renovation, whilst retaining its historic charm. Mayor Hans Werner Frömmel, an engineer, successfully struck a balance between traditional elements and modern design. With the utmost craftsmanship, a keen eye for historical detail and, in some cases, diving suits as workwear, the building was painstakingly dismantled piece by piece and rebuilt.

A mammoth project in pictures

Today, the Werzer Bathhouse is home not only to the award-winning restaurant ‘Das Badehaus’ but also to part of the Werzer Lake Spa and the secret suite at the Werzer Hotel Resort Pörtschach, situated behind it. The Badehaus is also the perfect venue for celebrations – whether it’s a wedding, an anniversary or a birthday: unforgettable moments are guaranteed in this charming setting.

Behind the white wooden façade of the bathhouse lies the historic section of the Werzer See-SPA. Two saunas with access to the lake, an outdoor pool overlooking the lake and several relaxation lounges that invite you to unwind.
