The History of the Wallerwirt
Tradition and Legend
Our hotel owes its name to a sensation from 1873. Back then, a huge catfish from Lake Wörthersee – brought along by the landlord of the ‘Gasthaus zum Christoph’ – caused an international sensation at the World’s Fair in Vienna as the ‘Carinthian sea monster’ and has given the hotel its name to this day.
Today, the Wallerwirt and the Werzers Hotel Resort are united by the same genuine Carinthian hospitality. With respect for this history, we are continuing to develop our retreat in Töschling on Lake Wörthersee in a contemporary style, under the motto ‘Tradition lived in a modern way’. Following the modernisation of our cosy rooms (2025), our comfortable, modern lakeside wellness centre, situated right on the shore, has been delighting our guests since 2026. Further modernisation plans are already in the pipeline!

- Travelling by car: Coming from Salzburg (A10) or Vienna, leave the A2 Südautobahn at the Pörtschach West exit. After the motorway exit, turn left towards Pörtschach and immediately afterwards turn right again; drive through the railway underpass and you will find the entrance to the Seehotel Wallerwirt on your left.
